THE GARDEN CLUB CONCEPT

Las Jardineras is breaking ground on a new concept for Garden Clubs with older members.  We are trying out the idea of a Garden Club Emeritus.   The sticking point came, for our club, with the new laws surrounding non-profit status.  The members loved meeting, sharing gardening tips, various plants, lectures, information, food, and ideas.  They did not feel, however, that the $10 brought in by the raffle table per month constituted enough income to find a CPA and go through all the endless IRS paperwork.  The members decided to meet at various member's houses and different places around town for the social aspects but to put little burden on the club officers, some of whom have been in their jobs for 15 years or more.  As they meet, some of the topics for discussion will be; governance of the group by committee, functioning as a club without a bank account, and the usefulness of CGCI dues and Insurance fees.  The decision of the State to send Golden Gardens by e-mail and other conversions to totally electronic information sharing leaves many members in a quandary as the majority of the club is not on the Internet.  They enjoy the older ways and are proud of it.  Letters, phone calls, and human interaction brings a genteelness to life and a reflection on good manners of the past.
